Creating activities in Speakable is fast, flexible, and designed to help students build their speaking, listening, and writing skills. This guide walks you through the full process—from building your first activity to assigning it to students.
Step 1: Create a New Activity
From your Dashboard, click Create Activity. You'll be taken to a setup screen where you can choose how to start building.
Choose one of the following options:
- Start from Scratch – Build your activity one page at a time.
- Create with AI – Generate editable pages from a topic, text, or document.
- Bulk Create – Paste a list of prompts to generate multiple pages at once.
Your selected target language appears in the top left corner. Click it if you need to change the language.
A Welcome Page is added automatically. You can customize or delete it as needed.
Step 2: Add Pages to Your Activity
Click New Page to add content. Each page represents one step of the student experience. You can include any number of pages and combine different types.
Available page types:
- Listen & Repeat – Students repeat what they hear.
- Spoken Open Response – Students record open-ended answers.
- Written Open Response – Students write a response in the target language.
- Multiple Choice – Students select an answer from given choices.
- Media Page – Add images, video, or audio clips.
Step 3: Configure Each Page
Each page includes a range of customizable settings:
- Prompt – Write a question or task (or upload audio).
- Text-to-Speech – Optional audio support for written prompts.
- Target Language – Ensures that transcription and feedback are in the correct language.
- Points – Set how many points the page is worth.
- Media Area – Add optional visual or audio support.
- Grading Type:
- Manual – You review and score each submission.
- Pass/Fail – Speakable checks for completion and gives basic feedback.
- Rubric – Use detailed grading criteria (available on select plans).
Note: Instant feedback (suggested responses, grammar insights, and proficiency estimation) only works with Pass/Fail or Rubric grading. Manual grading will not trigger feedback.
Step 4: Preview the Student Experience
Click Preview to see how students will experience the activity. This view simulates Practice Mode, so you can test prompts, audio, and feedback before publishing.
Step 5: Publish the Activity
When you're ready, click Publish in the top-right corner.
On the publish screen, complete the required fields:
- Title
- Subject
- Language
- (Optional) Folder or Cover Image
- Toggle Viewable in Discover to share with other teachers if desired
Choose one of the following options:
- Save as Draft – Keep editing later
- Publish – Finalize and store in your My Library
- Publish & Assign – Proceed directly to the assignment flow
Step 6: Assign the Activity
Once published, you’ll choose how and when to assign the activity.
- Select the Assignment Type:
- Practice – Students receive feedback and can retry.
- Assessment – Students submit once, with no retries (available on select plans).
- Set the assignment name and point value
- Choose the classroom(s) to assign to
Click Schedule Assignment to continue.
Step 7: Schedule or Assign Immediately
On the scheduling screen, you can optionally:
- Set a Start Date
- Set a Due Date
- Or skip scheduling and assign immediately
Click Create Assignment when you're ready. The assignment will appear in your students’ dashboard at the scheduled time—or immediately if no schedule is set.
Managing Activities After Publishing
- All published activities are saved in My Library
- You can reassign any activity to a new class at any time
- You can also duplicate and edit an activity for future use
Quick Access to Tutorials
