Giving feedback on open responses is time-consuming. It’s hard to know if a student is really improving, and even harder to explain how they can improve.

That’s where Proficiency-Based AI Grading comes in.

This new AI grading option helps teachers set clear expectations and give meaningful feedback aligned to ACTFL, WIDA, or your own standards. You define the target. The student speaks or writes. The system provides feedback based on how well they met that target, so students know what to work on, and can try again.

What It Does

With Proficiency-Based AI Grading, you can:

  • Choose your preferred framework (ACTFL, WIDA, more coming soon)
  • Set a target level for any Spoken or Written Open Response
  • Automatically assess how closely student responses meet that target
  • Let students revise and retry, with feedback that supports growth

It’s especially useful when you want to focus on communicative ability over accuracy alone.

How It Works

When building a Spoken or Written Open Response page:

  1. Select “Standards-Based” as the grading method
  2. Choose your standard and target level
  3. Assign the activity in Practice or Assessment mode
  4. Students respond, receive targeted feedback, and can retry if needed
  5. Responses and grades appear in your assignment results

For Free Plan users and Team Plan teachers with Core or Advanced seats, each page graded this way uses 40 AI credits per classroom assigned. Unlimited seats and Organization Plans are not limited by credits.

What It Makes Possible

Proficiency-Based AI Grading gives students a clearer path forward. It also gives teachers a consistent, scalable way to track progress, not just accuracy.

Instead of spending hours interpreting responses and trying to explain where a student stands, you can focus on the next step: helping them get there.
