When students speak or write, they deserve feedback that helps them grow. In Speakable, AI feedback is designed to guide that growth instantly and clearly. Whether you're checking for grammar accuracy, measuring proficiency, or helping students refine their thinking, Speakable's AI gives students the feedback they need to improve — while saving teachers hours in the process.
This post breaks down how AI feedback works in Speakable, across both Open Response and Short Answer pages.
Open Response pages allow students to speak or write freely. Because responses can be expressive and open-ended, Speakable provides multiple layers of AI-powered feedback to help students improve.
Every Open Response submission includes a summary of how the response was scored, including which criteria the student met and where improvement is needed. This gives students a quick snapshot of their performance.
Depending on the grading method you choose (Pass/Fail, Rubric, or Proficiency-Based), the grading summary will:
Note: The feedback students receive depends on the grading method you select. Proficiency-based grading shows estimated levels, while rubric grading shows performance by criterion.
When Proficiency-Based grading is selected, Speakable will estimate the student’s language proficiency level. This estimate is based on widely recognized standards such as ACTFL, WIDA, or CEFR. It helps teachers track student growth over time and identify when students are ready for more advanced challenges.
Students will see this level as part of their feedback, with a brief explanation of what their current level means and what they can do to reach the next one.
Proficiency feedback and scores are automatically stored in student portfolios for tracking over time.
For written and spoken Open Responses, Speakable identifies grammar errors and patterns in student responses. This is designed to:
Grammar insights are explained in simple terms so students can understand and apply corrections. Teachers can review and adjust this feedback as needed.
Speakable also generates a sample response that reflects what a strong answer could look like. This model is:
Students can compare their work to this suggestion to see how they might express their ideas more clearly or accurately.
Example: For the prompt “Describe your daily routine,” the Suggested Response might be:“Every morning, I wake up at 7 a.m., eat breakfast, and go to school.”
Note: Teachers can turn off any of these AI feedback types in the Grading Settings when building an activity.
Short Answer pages are designed for questions with a correct response — things like vocabulary, grammar rules, translation, or factual recall. While the input is less open-ended, students still receive meaningful feedback.
When a student submits a Short Answer response, Speakable checks it against known correct answers and displays:
This helps students immediately identify misconceptions or gaps and try again when appropriate.
Note: Short Answer pages do not store student responses in portfolios.
Speakable gives teachers full control over the feedback students see. In the Grading Settings panel, you can:
These options help you align AI feedback with your classroom goals.
AI feedback is a support tool — for official assessments or grades, always review and adjust scores as needed.
AI feedback isn’t just about automation. It’s about giving students clearer, faster, and more helpful input so they can grow with every attempt. When paired with your guidance, it makes the learning process more effective and more personal.
And best of all — it frees up your time so you can focus on the students who need you most.
